Animal Themed Morning Basket

Morning Basket has continued to be the best thing about our days. We start while she is eating breakfast and end cuddled up together on the couch. There is no better way to start the day in my opinion and if all we do is morning basket we have had a great school day too!

May Morning Basket

This month we started our Sassafras Science Zoology so I decided to fill our basket with all things animals since she is so enthralled with them right now. I am still planning on including Journal, Bible, Poetry, Folktale, Non-Fiction, Art, Math, and Read Aloud (for her and me) in every months basket. Here is what is in our May Basket:

Q & A a day for Kids: A Three Year Journal – This was a Christmas present Santa brought to Emily and I am so excite to start using it. It has a simple question for everyday of the year, and on each page is space for three years worth of answers. So you will circle around to the questions again each year. I love the thought of having this for years to come and seeing how her answers change each year. For now I will be the one doing the writing because this is about her thoughts and feelings and not handwriting practice.

My First Bible & Prayers – This was in Emily’s Easter basket this year and I have been dying to use it, since we finished The Jesus Storybook Bible I thought it would be the perfect time. This Bible is absolutely beautifully illustrated. The stories are a good length and the prayers in the back are almost like poetry. I am planning on reading through the entire thing so you will probably see this in future Morning Baskets.

National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry – We both love anything National Geographic because we are suckers for beautiful images. This book of poetry does NOT disappoint. It is full of breath taking images and beautiful poems.

A World Full of Animal Stories – This will be our folktales for the month of May. We love the book A Year Full of Stories by the same author so when I saw this I new it would be the perfect fit for our May Morning Basket. It has short folktales about animals sorted by continent, so bonus for combining folktales with geography this month.

What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know – This book will encompass our non-fiction, art and math for the month. This book includes read aloud selections for every subject and it is one of my favorite resources thus far for kindergarten. We will read from a different subject each day of the week. We are almost done with this one, I am so amazed at how much we can cover by doing just a little each day in our morning basket. This will be the last month it will be included because we are almost done with it.

The Sassafras Science Adventures – Zoology (my read aloud) – Emily asked to learn about animals and I have been dying to try out Sassafras so this seemed like a good fit. We have the Guide and Logbook as well. I will read a section a day out of this during our morning time.

Eric Carle’s Animals Animals (her read aloud) – Her reading has really exploded lately so I wanted her to try a new genre of reading. I think reading poetry will be fun for her. Plus anything Eric Carle draws her in, so I know she is going to love this.

Paint by Sticker Zoo Animals & Paint by Sticker Ocean Animals – Emily loves stickers and she loves art so this screamed at me when I spotted them at Barnes and Noble. She will be free to do them as I read aloud each morning.

All of the above things will be done everyday and even if that is all we get done I will be happy and feel as though we have accomplished a great homeschool day. But I also added in a game because we love games!

Cardline : Animals – We start off playing this like a war to familiarize ourselves with the facts. So we will play based on weight with whoever has the higher weight keeping the two cards, then by length, and by lifespan. Once we feel like we have a pretty good grasp on the animals we play the way the rules specify.
