Kindergarten Around the World Unit Study

Around the World Unit Study

This might have been one the simplest units to plan but boy did it have a BIG impact! It all started with a family member of ours moving to Japan and showing Emily where that was on a globe and next thing I knew she had all of these questions that I was not prepared for, time for a unit study.

Around the World Unit Study

I chose Discovery Kids Atlas: Explore and Discover the Wonders of Your World as a spine for this unit. It is colorful, engaging, has multiple activities and explored the world in a kid friendly way. In my search for things that were around the world I found A World Full of Animal Stories I knew I had to have it. Emily loves animals and this book is animal folktales, myths and legends from around the world sorted by continent. It was perfect for this unit study.

Continent Boxes

I spent a few weeks creating continent boxes that I planned to surprise her with each week as we dive into a new continent. There were a huge success. The open ended play gave her the opportunity to familiarize herself with the culture and geography of each continent.

Around the World Unit Study

Another one of her favorites was the Melissa and Doug World Map Puzzle. She completed this puzzle multiple times and each time grew more proud of herself as she could state more and more of the continents and oceans.

Pyramids of Giza

We also watched Planet Earth on Netflix as a family. And of course we played some games too. The around the world games we played were Explore the World, All Around the World, and Flag Frenzy.

Christmas Around the World
To close out our unit study we went to Disney World (we are annual pass holders) for the Holidays Around the World Celebration at Epcot. This was such a cool experience for all of us. We were able to not only experience the holidays for each country but eat the food and talk to the people as well. This was the highlight of the entire unit for all of us.
